Chapter Twenty
The coffee shop was a little more artsy than Annabel would have liked. But it was right up Cassie's street. Cassie looked perfectly at home, her hands cradling a large cup of coffee and her legs crossed as she sank back into an armchair.
âSo?â said Cassie.
Annabel crossed her legs, then re-crossed them the other way. She wanted to talk about this, she reminded herself. She needed someone to bounce ideas off. For business, her ideas bounced off Billy. For her personal life? Well, up until a week ago she hadn't actually had a personal life. Cassie had been the one person she could think of to call. The one person that she could open up to. And the one person in exactly the right position to give her the kind of advice she needed.
âSo?â she echoed, not sure where to start.
Cassie grinned and pushed her hair behind her ears. âAs much as I'm honored to be asked out to coffee, both you and I know that we don't generally have this kind of relationship. Which is fine. I respect you, I respect my husband's taste in friends, and I would never push you into a friendship that was uncomfortable for you.â
âRight,â said Annabel. She sighed. She kind of needed to take the bull by the horns.
âI'm happy to help you with whatever you need, you know?â
âI know.â
âSo?â said Cassie again.
âI really like Indy.â The words blurted out and sounded stupid as soon as she said them.
To give Cassie her due, she showed no surprise whatsoever. The benefits of talking to a professional, Annabel thought wryly.
âThat's fantastic, Annabel.â
âIs it really though?â She picked up her own coffee. âI mean, I've wanted to be alone for so long. I'm happy being alone. And now I find that I actually like someone and I'm thinking about changing things, changing the way I am, and I'm not sure I'm okay with that.â
Cassie laughed. âAnnabel, darling, life is change. That's all it is. If you didn't constantly change, you'd be nowhere. Look at LBN. You're constantly working on it, right? Constantly adding new things? Because if you didn't, it would stagnate. And life is no different.â
âI guess.â
âThis is a good thing, Annabel. You came to me because you want someone to give you permission to change your mind about something, so fine, I give you permission. But you don't actually need it. All you need to do is to decide for yourself and do it. It's really that simple.â
Annabel took a breath. Cassie was right, she'd wanted someone's permission. Changing her mind about something as integral to herself as wanting to be alone versus with a partner was a big deal. Yet it hadn't felt that way when it happened. It was like a gleaming realization, seeing Indy, touching her, kissing her and suddenly things fell into place and there she was, happy with another person.
âNot being alone is good, Annabel. As long as you're happy and you're not hurting anyone else, then anything you want is good.
